Each to his own I suppose.

Trivia: the little gearlever selects four gears, the larger lever chooses whether they are to be of the forward or rearward variety.

Lucite was quite a popular material for interior controls at the time, I believe Delahaye and Alfa Romeo both used it, among others, for things like buttons, control stalks, and even steering wheels.

Mais oui. It had a Cotal gearbox which used one lever to select the four gears electrically and had a separate forward/reverse mechanism. You were recommended to use 3R for reversing purposes as the torque in 1R or 2R wouldn't do the gearbox any good.

No, they weren't that ambitious!

Yes, that's a Delahaye. They probably regarded it as modern and trendy at the time.

well that's certainly bizarre and something you wouldn't get nowadays as many people would be using 1/2R and breaking the gearboxes then

It certainly was, a new wonder material at the time. Unfortunately, it is quite prone to yellowing with age.

I'm guessing they've done a fairly major restoration then!

Absolutely, with the values involved, I'd say almost every surviving postwar Delahaye has been totally stripped down and rebuilt bolt by bolt by now.

Interestingly, they're not all so expensive.

Or indeed

Really nice interior details. I bet the exterior of that Delahaye is pretty too.

For whatever reason, the more conventional prewar cars don't seem to get the same love as the more exuberantly styled postwar and late prewar ones.

Yes, old car values are a funny thing. Some makes attract no interest even if very few are left but others, especially with a racing history or just because, attract millions each time they're taken from one climate controlled garage to be auctioned and put into another.
